ROCHESTER, NY (05/24/2011)(readMedia)-- Nazareth College is pleased to announce that Shirley Sharp, clinical associate professor in the social work department, recently received two awards for her outstanding accomplishments as a social work practitioner and her commitment to the Nazareth College campus community. Sharp received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Genesee Valley Division of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award from Nazareth College.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Sharp in April 2011 in recognition of her dedication and knowledge in the social work profession and beyond. Sharp has created a lasting impact in the community. She is committed to providing the highest level of academic and field practice opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. Sharp was the NASW Genesee Valley Social Worker of the Year in 1994.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Award was also received by Sharp in April from the Nazareth College community in recognition of her commitment to the moral and spiritual values of non-violence, speaking out against violence, and passing on the teachings of MLK.
Sharp, of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., graduated from Smith College in 1969 with her master's in social work. She then became a family caseworker for Family Services of Philadelphia and director of admissions and group therapy at the Children's Home of Detroit. Sharp has been a faculty member of the social work department at Nazareth College since 1977.
