ST. PAUL, MN (10/10/2012)(readMedia)-- Carleton's men's soccer team faced a difficult schedule over the weekend, with regionally -ranked opponents visiting Northfield both Saturday and Sunday. However, the Knights came away with a tie and win in the crucial games, thanks largely to the play of junior Neil Bartholomay (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall). The Knights' defender scored a huge goal in each game - including one game-winner, and anchored Carleton's stellar defensive efforts throughout its big weekend. For his performance, Bartholomay was voted the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete-of-the-Week, the first Knight to receive the honor this season.

Bartholomay and his Carleton teammates claimed a crucial conference point Saturday when they tied regionally-ranked Augsburg 1-1. The junior scored Carleton's lone goal of the game, cashing in on a close-range rebound in the second half to help the Knights secure the tie. He also headed in the game-winner off a first-half free kick a day later, as Carleton shut out the nation's top-ranked offense in a 2-0 nonconference win over St. Scholastica. Bartholomay and his teammates held the CSS offense and its 61 goals to just five shots (two on goal) in the win. This season, Bartholomay has helped Carleton lead the MIAC in goals against average (0.72) and his three goals rank second among MIAC defenders.

With the 1-0-1 weekend, Carleton improved to 10-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, where the Knights are currently tied for third with Augsburg with 10 points in the standings. The Knights are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak into a big week in conference play. Carleton hits the road for two this week, traveling to Winona to face Saint Mary's Wednesday at 7 p.m., and heading to St. Paul Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against Hamline.
