New Anti-Fraud Program to be Launched in New York

Aim is to Protect Consumers and Financial Institutions from Fake Check Scams

NEW YORK, NY (12/06/2010)(readMedia)-- On Tuesday, December 7 at 11:30 a.m. the New York State Consumer Protection Board is joining with the Credit Union Association of New York, the New York Bankers Association, the Independent Bankers Association of New York State and Consumer Federation of America to announce the start of a new and innovative program to protect consumers and financial institutions against fake check scams. Speakers will:

  • Explain what fake check scams are and how they work
  • Provide examples of complaints from consumers about fake check scams
  • Identify the misconceptions about checks that lead to scams
  • Describe a new partnership with participating credit unions and banks in New York to provide consumers with the information they need to avoid victimization
