ROCHESTER, NY (05/10/2011)(readMedia)-- The Department of State's Division of Consumer Protection will join with other organizations on Tuesday, May 10, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to help consumers prevent identity theft by shredding their paper documents containing personal information.

The Department of State is teaming up with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Action for a Better Community, and Classified Shredding for the one-day event. Residents are encouraged to stop by to have their personal records shredded free of charge by trained and licensed professionals.

Shredding is a proven deterrent of identity theft, which can result when someone "dumpster dives" or sifts through the contents of your trash and then uses your personal information as their own. You can protect your identity by thoroughly destroying documents containing personal or sensitive data.
