New Director At The College of New Rochelle Brooklyn Campus

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (02/29/2012)(readMedia)-- Dr. LaKersha Smith of Bedford Stuyvesant has been appointed the new director of The College of New Rochelle School of New Resources Brooklyn Campus, succeeding Dr. Darryl Jones. Dr. Jones was recently appointed Acting Assistant Dean of CNR.

Dr. Smith has been on the faculty and worked as an administrator with The College of New Rochelle for seven years. She most recently served as assistant campus director at the Brooklyn Campus. Of her appointment, Dr. Smith said, "For 29 years, the School of New Resources of The College of New Rochelle has served the Bedford Stuyvesant community through its Brooklyn Campus. I look forward to continuing to provide educational opportunities to adult learners."

As an educator, Dr. Smith's primary research interests have involved exploring the role of schooling in the lives of educationally marginalized students. She has also been investigating the role students' culture plays in fostering their educational development.

She is the recipient of the Spencer Foundation's Discipline Based Studies in Education Fellowship, been granted the Calvin W. Ruck award, which recognizes young scholars committed to social justice, and received The Larry Murphy Award from the Adult Higher Education Alliance for her work on transformative learning in non-traditional student populations.

She has published in a variety of educational journals and books, including Pedagogy, Culture & Society, and The Journal of Social Issues.

Dr. Smith received her doctorate in Social/Personality Psychology from The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY). She lives in Brooklyn New York's Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood with her husband and son.
