BATAVIA, NY (12/19/2014)(readMedia)-- The Health and Physical Education department at Genesee Community College congratulates Wolcott Street School in Le Roy for winning the 2014 Play to Get Fit Challenge. Le Roy unseats Byron-Bergen, which had captured the title two years in a row. This is the third year GCC has conducted the program.

The Genesee Play to Get Fit Program was created for third, fourth and fifth graders in the GLOW (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties) region to show how many minutes they spend engaged in physical activity outside of school. Children keep track through a specially designed "Play to Get Fit" calendar log. Walking, biking, running, skating, swimming, playing a sport, playing tag, playing on a swing set and other active, creative games are all eligible for active "credit." However, video fitness games utilizing Wii or Xbox Kinect are not eligible.

Wolcott Street School in Le Roy came out on top with a total of 108,011 minutes of physical activity outside of school. GCC Director of Health and Physical Education Becky Dziekan presented Physical Education Teacher Michael Humphrey with a plaque recognizing the school's achievement. Each student participant also received a certificate.

In addition, Dziekan recognized three students who recorded the highest amounts of physical activity among all 11 GLOW region participating school districts. They were: Joshua Zittel of Byron-Bergen (6,750 minutes), Tommy Condidorio of Le Roy (6,055 minutes), and Gabe Kahl of Warsaw (4,805 minutes).

"We congratulate the students and schools who've shown a commitment to healthy, active lifestyles," Professor Dziekan said. "We hope that by encouraging activity at the earliest ages we can instill a lifelong commitment to physical fitness."

The Health and Physical Education program at Genesee Community College offers several areas of study. Transfer Degree Programs (A.S.) include Physical Education Studies and Sport Management Studies. Career Degree Programs (A.A.S.) include Fitness and Recreation Management, including the Golf Management Concentration through which passionate golfers can turn the sport into a career.

In addition, there are a number of classes available to help individuals enhance career skills, such as Turf and Pest Management (PED 281). Offered in Spring 2015, this class provides New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) pesticide applicator certification for those who successfully complete the course.
