ALBANY, NY (08/21/2025) (readMedia)-- The New York State Association for Rural Health (NYSARH) is proud to announce the release of its Rural Summit on Aging Report - a comprehensive summary of insights, challenges, and actionable recommendations to support aging populations in rural New York State.
Held earlier this year, the Aging Policy Summit convened experts, stakeholders, and community advocates to address the unique healthcare, housing, transportation, and social service needs of rural older adults. The newly published report synthesizes those discussions, offering a clear path for policy development and community-based solutions tailored to rural regions.
"NYSARH is committed to ensuring that aging New Yorkers in rural communities are not left behind," said Alison Coates, President of the NYSARH Board of Directors. "This report reflects the voices of those on the ground-providers, stakeholders, families, experts, and older adults themselves-and underscores our urgent need to act collaboratively."
The report calls for greater investment in rural health infrastructure, improving access to care in rural regions, addressing transportation and connectivity gaps, targeted investments in workforce recruitment and retention strategies, and increased support for both formal and informal caregivers. NYSARH intends for the findings to guide policymakers and leaders as they work to support the growing demographic of older adults living outside urban centers.
"Our rural communities are resilient, but they need support," added NYSARH Board Member and report co-author, Melissa Wendland. "With this report, we're offering not only a diagnosis of the challenges but a vision for what is possible when we work together to advocate for the health and dignity of rural seniors."
