New York State Bar Association Issues Report: "Judicial Diversity: A Work In Progress"

ALBANY, NY (09/24/2014)(readMedia)-- The New York State Bar Association today issued a report comparing the diversity of the state's judges with the diversity of New York's population.

The report, "Judicial Diversity: A Work in Progress," shows that some districts better reflect the diversity of their geographic areas than others.

"New York State has one of the most diverse populations in the United States, but the rich multiracial, multi-cultural tapestry of New York's people is not adequately reflected in the judiciary," the report concludes.

More than a year of research by the Judicial Section of the Association went into the report, which cites statistics from the state Office of Court Administration and the 2010 U.S. Census.

"Diversity long has been a goal of the State Bar Association, whether it be in law schools, law firms, our association or the courts. This report highlights that achieving judiciary diversity indeed is a work in progress," said President Glenn Lau-Kee of New York City (Kee and Lau-Kee).

A copy of the report is available at www.nysba.org/judicialdiversityreport.

The 75,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
