Press Conference Will Detail New Hotline, Which Offers Free Information to Help Seniors Stay Safe and Improve Lives

NEW YORK, NY (10/19/2010)(readMedia)-- The New York State Consumer Protection Board, the State Office for the Aging, and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale launch a toll-free "Senior Information Line," which allows callers state-wide to access the latest news about issues of interest to seniors.

WHAT:

The New York State Consumer Protection Board, the State Office for the Aging, and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale launch a toll-free “Senior Information Line,” which allows callers state-wide to access the latest news about issues of interest to seniors.

Each month, the line will offer free information that seniors can use to stay safe, maximize their independence and improve their everyday lives. The line will cover topics such as:

o Reducing the risk of identity theft;

o Avoiding the latest scams that target seniors;

o Stopping telemarketing calls and recognizing the signs of telemarketing fraud;

o Choosing the right cell phone without busting your budget;

o Protecting safety at home and in public;

o Changes to the New York Power of Attorney Law.

Seniors can access the line by dialing 1-800-503-9000. Information will also be available at www.nysconsumer.gov. All information will be available in English and Spanish. A new topic will be added monthly.
