TROY, NY (02/16/2010)(readMedia)-- Earlier this month a resolution was introduced in the Albany County Legislature that would provide an additional $10,000 for the County's handgun buyback program. This program accepts handguns in exchange for $150 gift certificates to local malls. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association opposes this expenditure. Handgun buyback programs have never been shown to have a significant effect on crime. The handguns turned in are typically old and, in some cases, inoperable. They have never been – and never will be – crime guns. In these difficult economic times there is surely a better use for $10,000 than to fund the destruction of doorstops and paperweights.
