New York Water Rangers See Victory in DRBC Fracking Vote Cancellation

ALBANY, NY (11/18/2011)(readMedia)-- (ALBANY, NY)--In response to the announcement that the Delaware River Basin Commission has canceled its November 21 vote on allowing industrial gas drilling and high volume hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," in the Delaware River Watershed, the New York Water Rangers released the following statement:

"The DRBC's postponement of the vote on fracking regulations marks a critical step forward in the battle to protect our waters and communities from fracking. When added to recent announcements from Delaware and New York that both states plan to vote against the proposed regulations, the DRBC's action is further evidence that state leaders are listening to the voices of people concerned about the dangers of fracking, particularly those living in communities where industrial gas drilling is likely to occur."

The New York Water Rangers urge Governor Cuomo and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Martens to heed Delaware Governor Markell's warning:

"It is more important to get it right than to be fast."

The New York Water Rangers campaign is supported by a network of organizations working to protect the rights and health of New Yorkers and one of our most precious environmental resources--water-from the dangers of irresponsible, poorly regulated and under-inspected natural gas exploration and development. The campaign is supported by Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, Catskill Mountainkeeper, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Earthjustice, EARTHWORKS Oil & Gas Accountability Project, Environmental Advocates of New York, Environment New York, FLEASED, Natural Resources Defense Council, Otsego 2000 and Riverkeeper.
