MORRISTOWN, NJ (04/19/2011)(readMedia)-- Newton resident and College of Saint Elizabeth student Ally Reeves, '11, and her partner Starr Terrell, '11, were awarded second prize at Third Annual Tri-Collegiate Psychology Student Research Symposium held at Drew University, April 14, 2011. Reeves, a double psychology and justice studies major, presented, The Battle Against Public Speaking Anxiety. It was one of 20 presented by undergraduate students from Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and CSE.
"We are all very proud of our students!" says Dr. Patricia Heindel, CSE area chair, Human and Social Development. "The projects at the Tri-Collegiate Research Symposium are judged based not only on the quality of the research, but also on the quality of the students' presentation of the study and understanding of the findings and implications of the work. Our students presented themselves so well and were terrific representatives of the College of Saint Elizabeth."
Of their winning project, Reeves, says, "We put a lot of work in this project. Just to be able to present was an honor in itself, but then to be recognized makes it even better."
Their research investigated which technique was most effective in reducing public speaking anxiety. The project involved 20 female undergraduates who underwent pre- and post-testing. "It was challenge, after challenge, after challenge," remembers Reeves. "Since we had to do both pre- and post-testing, we had double the work."
In the end, Ally agrees, their efforts paid off. It was a great way to finish her undergraduate careers. Then it is off to graduate school next year.
