WHITTER, CA (07/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Northborough native Carolyn Mukai was named to the Whittier College Spring 2013 Dean's List in recognition of her academic excellence. The chemistry major graduated Summa Cum Laude and with distinction in the major on May 17.

A Whittier Poet, Mukai dominated the field as a lacrosse midfielder earning 1st Team Honors from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) for four consecutive seasons. She served as team captain in 2013.
In addition, Mukai, who minored in studio art, rounded off her senior year by winning the President's Art Purchase Prize for her large-scale painting, which now becomes part of College's art collection and will be exhibited on campus for successive generations of students and visitors to see.
The art piece, 4-[(E)-2-(Biphenyl-4-yl)diazelyn]-morphaline, was inspired by Mukai's work as an undergraduate chemistry research fellow at Whittier. This research will be featured in an article just accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of Chemical Crystallography.
