WELLESLEY, MA (11/29/2012)(readMedia)-- Alice Choe, graduate of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, has been nominated for the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Choe is one of four nominees from Wellesley College.

The Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant of $25,000 for independent study and travel outside the United States awarded to graduating college seniors. Each year, approximately 150 nominees from participating institutions are considered for 40 fellowships. Fellows typically travel to three or more countries to pursue a project that, according to the Watson website, "enhances capacity for resourcefulness, imagination, openness, and leadership, and to foster their humane and effective participation in the world community." Awards are announced by March 15.

"The Watson really focuses on personal growth through passion," said Choe. Choe's proposal, entitled "Domestic Violence Across Cultures," would enable her to travel to Jordan, India, East Timor and Thailand to learn about the various motivations and mechanisms women have for escaping domestic abuse. A psychology major, she became interested in this issue after working at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic in Chicago one summer.
