SENATOBIA, MS (02/27/2018) At their first quarterly meeting of 2018, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation Board of Directors celebrated a record year of giving. Sybil Canon, associate vice president of Development and Special Projects, announced that $1,030,000 was donated to the Northwest Foundation in 2017.
Canon commended the board for their leadership and generosity in helping to reach the goal. "While we have come very close to the million-dollar mark in a single year, it was not until last year that we surpassed $1 million in contributions for a single year. This was made possible through the leadership of our board of directors and the generosity of hundreds of donors who believe very strongly in providing scholarships and textbook assistance to Northwest students," Canon said.
Patti Gordon, director of Alumni Affairs and Development Operations stated that the endowment is now valued at $11 million. "Since 1996, we have awarded $4.5 million in scholarships and we will be able to award more than $500,000 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year. With the $11 million endowment, and $5 million in scholarships that have been given to our students, this is a total of $16 million, all for the purpose of assisting the students attending Northwest," Gordon said.
All students planning to attend Northwest in the fall of 2018 are eligible to apply for a Foundation scholarship. Foundation scholarships are awarded to both recent high school graduates and adult students.
The deadline to apply for Foundation scholarships is April 1. Online applications are available at the college's website, northwestms.edu. For more information, please call Marla Kennedy, Foundation Scholarship coordinator at 662-560-1103 or email mkennedy@northwestms.edu.
