One Year Anniversary of Equity Residential's Shocking N.J. Garage Collapse

Construction Workers Will Meet with Affected Residents to Discuss Ongoing Impact of Garage Collapse

NEW YORK CITY, NY (07/14/2011)(readMedia)-- Saturday July 16th is the one year anniversary of Equity Residential's shocking three story garage collapse in Hackensack N.J., which forced more than 300 residents from their homes. Members of Metallic Lathers Union Local 46 will gather at Prospect Towers - site of the collapse - to meet with tenants and discuss their ongoing hardships over coffee and bagels.

According to Robert Ledwith, Business Manager of Local 46, " as construction workers we understand the trauma caused by building accidents. On the one year anniversary of the collapse we want to check in with the residents and see what kind of help we can offer them."

The Bergen Record recently reported that more than a third of the building's units remained vacant due to the collapse. Equity had initially announced that residents would be able to return by November of 2010.

Significant controversy continues to surround this incident. In May 2010, a licensed engineer warned Equity that the garage might "catastrophically collapse." Equity ignored those warnings, putting the safety of its tenants, employees, and the general public at risk. As a result, tenants have field a lawsuit against the company. The case is pending.
