Pa. Turnpike Traffic to be 'Paced' Monday between Butler Valley and Pittsburgh Exits

June 13 paces are necessary to allow safe demolition of old Turnpike bridge pier.

NEW STANTON, PA (06/09/2011)(readMedia)-- On June 13, Pennsylvania Turnpike motorists approaching the Allegheny Valley Interchange (Exit #48) will encounter a traffic pace led by the Pennsylvania State Police starting at Butler Valley Exit (#39) eastbound and the Pittsburgh Exit (#57) westbound just prior to a scheduled 1:30 p.m. blast of the remainder of Pier 5 from the old Allegheny River Bridge. During the 30-minute pace, state police cruisers will drive side-by-side to restrict eastbound and westbound Turnpike traffic to about 20-25 miles an hour, allowing the contractor a window to complete the demolition without jeopardizing motorist or worker safety. Motorists in the area should be prepared for slow-moving traffic and possible intermittent stoppages. The Turnpike conducts pacing maneuvers in certain construction situations as an alternative to full roadway closures and detours. Also, local traffic will be restricted on Freeport Road and Denny Estates in the vicinity of the pier during the blast. The restriction and paces will be lifted once crews complete a safety inspection.
