AIKEN, SC (11/01/2017) Throughout October - designated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month - University of South Carolina Aiken students designed t-shirts hung in the Quad to help raise awareness of the issue and highlight resources available to victims.

"Domestic violence awareness is important to provide education on the topic, prevent it, and help those who are affected by it," said Hailey Horn, USC Aiken peer educator.

"It's important for our students to know that domestic violence does not only include physical abuse."

The Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons is one local resource for victims of domestic violence. Many USC Aiken student organizations conduct activities that benefit the Cumbee Center.

"Domestic violence is a community-wide public health issue that affects every individual and family in South Carolina," according to the center's website.

"Domestic violence thrives when the community is silent; but if we take a stand and work together, we can end domestic and intimate partner violence."
