Peggy Bowen-Hartung, Ph.D., CTS, winner of the Sister Donatilla Faculty Award

READING, PA (04/22/2013)(readMedia)-- Peggy Bowen-Hartung, Ph.D., CTS, of Mohnton, Pa., was presented with the Sister Donatilla Faculty Award during an honors ceremony at Alvernia University, Sun., April 21, 2013. Bowen-Hartung is an associate professor of criminal justice, chair of the psychology and counseling department, and chair of the Institutional Review Board at Alvernia.

The Sister Mary Donatilla Faculty Award is awarded to a full-time faculty member who has given long service to the university in teaching, advising, service, and support. Recipients are chosen by peers who are members of the university's Honors and Awards Committee.

Dr. Bowen-Hartung started at Alvernia University in 2004. Since then, she has taught a number of classes in psychology and criminal justice. At any given time, she is an advisor to at least 50 students, and oversees the Alpha Phi Sigma, Gamma Nu Chapter of the Criminal Justice Honor Society. She serves on Alvernia's Honors Advisory Board, Faculty Grievance Committee, Co-Curricular Committee, Graduate Advisory Committee, Student Advising Committee, and is chair of the Institutional Review Board. She has mentored junior faculty, and regularly presents at national and international conferences.

Dr. Bowen-Hartung is characterized as a "tireless educator, student advocate and devoted employee of Alvernia University," who has high expectations for her students and constantly challenges students in the classroom to "expand their horizons, to think creatively and to act independently."

She supports students outside of the classroom through advising, counseling, writing letters of recommendation, mentoring, helping students prepare for job interviews, and encouraging them to participate in presentations at national and international conferences. She also finds time in her busy life for her colleagues or to attend university sport events and social functions. In the words of one of her colleagues, "She is always available to help, to serve, to take on added work or responsibilities, because it is the right thing to do."
