New record set in Iowa State Fair Big Ram Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/07/2014)(readMedia)-- A two-year-old Hampshire ram from Perry set a new Iowa State Fair record, tipping the scales at 507.5 pounds during the Big Ram competition judged Thursday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

The top ram, dubbed "Zeus" by owner Daryl Mickelson, bested his nearest competitor by 86.5 pounds.

Second place was claimed by Seelow Sheep Farms' two-year-old Rambouillet ram who weighed in at 421 pounds.

Solid Rock, the four-year-old Suffolk ram owned by Merle Van Klompenburg of Orange City claimed third place at 408.5 pounds.

"Nothing Compares" to the 2014 Iowa State Fair, August 7-17. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
