LONG ISLAND, NY (08/19/2025) (readMedia)-- Last week, Phoenix House of New York and Long Island celebrated the opening of new basketball courts at their Hauppauge location with Senator Monica Martinez and former NBA Player Michael Sweetney. Thanks to a $50K grant from Senator Martinez, Phoenix House made key enhancements to the campus including new fencing, seating, lighting, and storage to the current courts.
In addition, Senator Martinez has awarded Phoenix House another $50K to establish a computer lab and update security systems at the Brentwood Mental Health Community Residence. In 2023, there were nearly 6,000 Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) admissions throughout Suffolk County. Building on Phoenix House's services through the Suffolk County Trainings in Overdose Prevention, the Brentwood Mental Health Community Residence provides flexible, recovery-oriented outpatient mental health treatment for local community members.

"We are deeply grateful to Senator Martinez for her unwavering support and generous funding, which has allowed us to enhance our Hauppauge campus with revitalized basketball courts and provide critical upgrades to our Brentwood residence. These improvements reflect our commitment to fostering wellness and community for the New Yorkers we serve. A special thank you to Michael Sweetney for inspiring our clients with his powerful message on mental health and resilience," said Ann-Marie Foster, President & CEO of Phoenix House of NY and LI.
"I'm grateful that Phoenix House NY invited me in to speak with the guys about the importance of taking care of their mental health. This is something dear to my heart because I struggled myself while on the biggest stage of my life. The work that Phoenix House is doing is very admirable!" said Michael Sweetney.
"The path to recovery is difficult, but through the supportive treatment offered by Phoenix House, our neighbors are finding the strength to overcome addiction. The programs and services provided, including at the Hauppauge residential center, are a vital part of the healing process, and I am proud to have supported this funding. The road may be long, but with the compassionate counseling, dignity, and respect Phoenix House provides, New Yorkers are beating substance use disorders and rebuilding their lives," said New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez.
