Phoenix House Receives Federal Grant to Support Formerly Incarcerated Adults with Substance Use Disorder

SAMHSA Awards Leading Substance Use Treatment Provider with $400,000 to Support New Beginnings Adult Recovery Program in Suffolk County

SUFFOLK, NY (07/24/2023) (readMedia)-- Leading substance use disorder treatment provider Phoenix House was awarded $400,000 from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The funds will support the New Beginnings Adult Reentry Program. This program will serve 220 individuals 18 years or older with a substance use disorder – including those with co-occurring substance use and mental health diagnoses – who are returning to their communities following a period of incarceration in Suffolk County jails. The program aims to promote a stable transition from incarceration to community based living, prevent treatment relapse, prevent recidivism, and improve behavioral, social and mental health functioning among program participants. SAMHSA awarded grants to 11 substance use providers, nonprofits, and local officials across the state to mitigate the ongoing overdose crisis.

"We are grateful to SAMHSA for their partnership on battling the epidemic of overdose deaths across our state. The transition back into one's community after being incarcerated is not an easy one, and those dealing with substance use disorder face additional challenges that make it downright life-threatening. But these are lives we can protect from overdose with the proper care and support. That's why we're so proud to put SAMHSA's grant money to use supporting our New Beginnings program," said Phoenix House President & CEO Ann-Marie Foster.
