Phoenix House of NY & LI to Host Candlelight Vigil in Brooklyn for International Overdose Awareness Day
In honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, Phoenix House will host a candlelight vigil in Brooklyn to memorialize the New Yorkers lost to the overdose crisis, and connect local residents to overdose prevention services
BROOKLYN, NY (08/29/2025) (readMedia)-- Today on August 29th, Phoenix House of New York & Long Island will lead a community candlelight vigil at Brooklyn Restoration Plaza, in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day. The event aims to honor those tragically lost to overdose, support grieving community members, and provide life-saving resources to combat the ongoing overdose crisis. In 2023, there were 3,046 fatal overdoses citywide, with Black and Latino New Yorkers suffering disproportionately, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
In addition to a candlelight vigil, activities will include an interactive memory walkthrough, narcan training, and a wellness word quest. Community members will have the opportunity to connect with staff and leadership, and learn about available programming and treatment services at the Brooklyn Community Recovery Center, which recently opened an art studio and community space for peer-led addiction recovery.
