Phoenix House to Lead Overdose Prevention Training + Vigil in BK for International Overdose Awareness Day

In honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, Phoenix House will host a candlelight vigil in Brooklyn to memorialize the New Yorkers lost to the overdose crisis, and connect local residents to overdose prevention services

BROOKLYN, NY (08/28/2026) (readMedia)-- On Monday aka International Overdose Awareness Day 2026, Phoenix House of New York and Long Island will host its annual overdose prevention workshop and community candlelight vigil at the Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch. The event aims to honor those tragically lost to overdose, support grieving community members, and provide life-saving resources to combat the ongoing crisis. In 2024, 2,192 residents died of overdose, with Black and Latino New Yorkers dying at twice the rate of white New Yorkers, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

In addition to essential narcan training sessions, the free event will include an information and education fair, and commemorative art activities for participants. Community members will have the opportunity to connect with staff and leadership, and learn about available programming and treatment services at the Brooklyn Community Recovery Center (BKCRC).
