NORFOLK, VA (06/21/2012)(readMedia)-- This fall, Physicians for Peace will honor J. Morgan Davis, president and chief banking officer of TowneBank, with its 2012 President's Award. The award, to be presented at the group's Seventh Annual Gala on Oct. 27, recognizes Davis's unwavering commitment to Physicians for Peace and his unmatched ability to bring friends together to support the international nonprofit.
"When Morgan dedicates himself to an organization, he puts his soul into the work," said Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.). "To call him tireless is an understatement. He believes passionately in Physicians for Peace – and the possibility of a healthier world for all people. It's our privilege to honor his service."
Davis is a longtime supporter of Physicians for Peace, which delivers targeted training, education and resources to healthcare providers in the developing world. He has been instrumental in growing the group's annual gala to a signature fundraiser that helps provide funds for year-round medical training to underserved communities in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, CentralAmerica and the Middle East.
In recent years, Morgan has become Physicians for Peace's public face – and unofficial Chief Fun Officer – in Hampton Roads. Since 2011, he has raised more than $55,000 for Physicians for Peace through his personal "Up on the Roof" summer parties at TowneBank headquarters in Virginia Beach. The events, which bring together hundreds of local supporters, are labors of love for Davis, who oversees every detail, from the menu and entertainment (including lively performances by Davis and his soon-to-be world-famous "Morganette" backup singers) to the post-party cleanup, where Davis is the first to grab a vacuum and lend a hand.
"That blend of influence, passion and humility gives Davis the ability to inspire others, and it makes him uniquely suited for the President's Award," Sconyers said. "Morgan lights a spark in so many people each and every day. His enthusiasm is contagious."
Over the years, Davis also has played an important role in the organization's strategic oversight and leadership, including a two-year term on the Board of Directors in 2007 and 2008. As a Director, Davis drew on his deep experience in banking to help guide Physicians for Peace's financial management. Those efforts have a clear legacy. Today, 95 percent of all cash and material donations invested in Physicians for Peace go directly to the field.
Physicians for Peace will present the 2012 President's Award to Davis on Oct. 27 during its Annual Gala at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside. At theevent, Davis will cement his role as Physicians for Peace's Chief Fun Officer when he serves as both master of ceremonies and auctioneer for the third consecutive year.
