POTSDAM, NY (04/21/2014)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will welcome the daring and creative Pilobolus Dance Theatre for an upcoming performance on Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. The performance is part of the CPS Guest Artist Series and takes place during SUNY Potsdam's 2014 Lougheed Festival of the Arts.

Named after a barnyard fungus that propels its spores with extraordinary speed, accuracy and strength, Pilobolus was founded by a group of Dartmouth College students. Since the dance company's inception, the group has continually formed diverse collaborations that break down barriers between disciplines and challenge the perception of dance. Physically and intellectually, the company has been engaging and inspiring audiences around the world, with its 115-piece repertory for 42 years.

"I would liken Pilobolus to Cirque du Soleil, less the aerial acrobatics. The images they create through their physicality are breathtaking," said CPS Executive Director Amy Flack.

In most recent years, the troupe has been featured in an array of diverse media, including the Academy Awards and the Olympic Games, as well as on "Oprah," "60 Minutes," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "Sesame Street." In recognition of their creativity, collaboration and lasting contributions to the field, Pilobolus has been nominated for a Grammy Award and have earned many awards and accolades.

"Pilobolus is a mind-blowing troupe of wildly creative and physically daring dancers who leap, fly, intertwine and break all the rules," Newsday said. "Audiences should expect the unexpected."
