BURLINGTON, VT (06/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Plainfield resident Jarod Alvord, who graduated from the University of Vermont this year with a major in environmental studies, is the 2010 recipient of UVM's Kidder Medal. The award identifies the senior male ranking first on leadership, scholarship, and service.
During his time as a student, Alvord served as a teaching assistant for several classes, became a member of Alpha Zeta honor society, worked as a life skills monitor for student athletes, and received America East All-Academic honors. Outside the classroom Jarod was involved in a variety of strong membership and leadership roles in the Vermont Campus Energy Group, the Men's Track and Field team, the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Relay for Life, the Essex, Vermont CHIPS Teen Center, and Special Olympics. He completed a minor in green building design and community entrepreneurship.
Alvord captured his UVM experience with these words: "The success of a student is measured in the type of individual they are when they leave higher education for good. I am leaving UVM educated, excited, and proud."
The award was announced at the University of Vermont's 206th Commencement ceremonies on May 23, where some 2,411 students were awarded a variety of bachelor's degrees, an estimated 514 advanced degrees and certificates were awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 102 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees.
