POMFRET, CT (06/03/2013)(readMedia)-- Ethan Uffland, a senior from Encino, California, has been awarded Pomfret School's Pearson Creative Writing Prize for his preschool memoir, "The Longer Trycicle."

Ethan based his gem of a story on preschool memories. His opening sentence, "All I wanted was the longer tricycle," set the tone for his creative essay on playground angst and the social importance of maneuvering one's young self onto the more substantial tricycles at recess.

Known officially as the Robert G. Pearson Short Fiction Award, the honor is presented every year to a senior in recognition of his or her short story or piece of creative prose. The prize was established by alumni Brad ('65) and Ridley Pearson ('71) in honor of their father, whose commitment to the writer's life inspired them. Ridley's work includes the New York Times bestseller Killer Summer and The Kingdom Keepers, the popular children's series of children's novels.
