Potsdam Brass Quintet Performs at The Crane School of Music

POTSDAM, NY (10/17/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present a concert featuring the Potsdam Brass Quintet on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Among the works to be performed are compositions by John Davison, W. Francis McBeth, Michael Kamen and Johann Joseph Fux.

Two compositions on the program are works by area composers. "Turns of Phrase," a 2010 composition by Crane School of Music faculty composer David Heinick, was written expressly for the Potsdam Brass Quintet. "Variations and Fugue on the Star-Spangled Banner," originally composed for organ by Dudley Buck, was rescored for brass quintet by Crane School faculty emeritus Arthur Frackenpohl.

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performers:

Established in 1968, the Potsdam Brass Quintet -- which consists of John Ellis and James Madeja, trumpet; Kelly Drifmeyer, horn; Mark Hartman, trombone, and Charles Guy, tuba -- is the brass quintet-in-residence at The Crane School of Music. The quintet has performed in concert throughout much of the United States and Canada, including performances at New York's Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The ensemble has been featured at state, national and international music conferences, including the International Trombone Festival, the International Horn Society Workshop, the College Music Society Conference, the Skyline Brass Music Festival, the MENC National Conference, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, the New York State School Music Association Conference and the New England Brass Convention. The ensemble has performed in concert with Canadian Brass and the Gregg Smith Singers on multiple occasions. The Potsdam Brass Quintet has recorded four albums on the Kendor and Mark Recording labels-"New York Composers," "Music for Brass Quintet," "La Réjouissance" and "The Art of Brass." A fifth album is currently in production.
