POTSDAM, NY (10/05/2010)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team participated in the Walkin' For Willz 5K Walk/Run to Cure Juvenile Diabetes on Saturday, Sept. 11, in Potsdam.

Bears players and coaches joined hundreds of local teams and organizations for the walk, which started at Ives Park, made a loop through the Clarkson University campus and ended back at the park. All proceeds went to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).

"We are pleased to raise money and awareness for such a fantastic cause and be involved in the Potsdam community," Bears coach Sherry Dobbs said. "Diabetes affects so many families not only in our area, but around the nation. Our guys are proud to be involved in an effort like this."

The Walkin' for Willz event is named in honor of Billy "Willz" Howlett, who in 2008 lost his battle against diabetes at age 20 due to rare and sudden complications. The event has raised nearly $70,000 since its inception for the Central New York chapter of JDRF.
