Professionals from the oil and gas industry will discuss the environmental, scientific and economic aspects of natural gas exploration in the Marcellus Shale - a geological formation that lies deep below sections of New York. Encased within the Marcellus Shale are trillions of cubic feet of natural gas which, if harvested, would provide enormous economic benefits to New York and its residents, and improve America's energy independence.
Discussion topics will include a brief history of natural gas exploration in New York, the industry's environmental safety record, current regulations, water usage, economic considerations and a question-and-answer session.
While natural gas exploration has been conducted safely in New York for decades, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is preparing to release an environmental impact statement on horizontal drilling - a more efficient technique that allows greater volumes of natural gas to be extracted from a single drill site. Questions stemming from the DEC's actions will be addressed as well.
Registration is encouraged but not required. Please call 518.432.9087, or e-mail dfasser@corningplace.com, for information.
