DES MOINES, IA (06/23/2009)(readMedia)-- Des Moines University (DMU) is the largest medical school in Iowa - not necessarily a school you'd expect to produce a literary journal. Now in its third year, however, the annual Abaton journal is very popular and the public is invited to submit work.
Overseen by DMU students and staff in the medical humanities department, the journal is made up entirely of submitted art, photography, prose, poetry, essays and more. Students, staff and alumni are, of course, invited to submit to the Abaton but a direct DMU-connection is by no means required.
This year's issue will have a global health theme and debut at the annual World Food Prize ceremonies in October. Some copies of the Abaton will actually be sold at the events to raise money for the World Health Organization.
Whether you write fiction or non-fiction, paint or shoot photos, your contributions are invited. The subject should in some way relate to global health care and/or the human condition. To actually browse the pages of the last edition, visit www.dmu.edu/abaton.
Submit work at www.dmu.edu/abaton by July 1.
