BATAVIA, NY (12/29/2011)(readMedia)-- The Accelerated College Enrollment (ACE) department of Genesee Community College is offering a Public Speaking course at the Medina Campus Center for Orleans and Niagara county high school and home schooled students. Public Speaking (SPE 108), offered through ACE's "College Today" program provides students of all interests with a strong start to their career aspirations and encouragingly develops each student's confidence in speaking before others, which is an important aspect to success in every employment situation.

Students in SPE 108 develop listening and organizational skills and the ability to present messages effectively in various speaking situations. Through this course, students develop strategies to control nervousness by participating in "ice-breaker" assignments, relaxation exercises and graduated speaking assignments that put theory into practical application. They also differentiate between informative and persuasive speaking, and begin to develop writing and organizational skills by learning to write manuscripts and producing a formal outline for designated speeches. The course is designed to improve eye contact, expressiveness, posture, movement, volume, clarity and content of message, and also how to employ complimentary visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations.

Public Speaking 108 will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:15-2:45 PM. Class begins January 30 and runs through June 8, 2011. Mr. Gil Stern, a GCC adjunct faculty member is the instructor.

College Today classes are college credit courses offered to qualified high school students in the college campus setting. High school students who enroll in College Today earn college credit and take advantage of a reduced tuition rate. More than 40 school districts participate in Genesee's ACE programs that consist of College Today, Advanced Studies, College Tech Prep, Upward Bound and Liberty Partnerships.

Students who participate in Genesee's ACE program obtain a head start on their college career and are able to experience aspects of college life including class selection, registration, and utilizing college facilities. Additionally, ACE students pay a lower tuition rate than traditional students, typically one-third the cost of regular college tuition and will be afforded a Genesee Community College transcript detailing their completed coursework.
