Three Roger Williams University students are interning with the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program, which is housed at RWU. The students contribute to protecting and improving the bay and surrounding watersheds, gain valuable real-world experience, and train to become the next generation of environmental leaders.
Interns are senior Nathan Silveira, a Civil Engineering major from Bristol, R.I., who is studying how to create an environmentally friendly geotextile mesh made with soybeans (instead of conventional plastic) to minimize soil erosion; sophomore Mandi Greenhalgh, an Environmental Science major from Clinton, N.J., who is researching how the removal of a dam in Rhode Island will impact the local environment; and senior Michelle Kryl, an Environmental Engineering major from Westhampton Beach, N.Y., who is investigating how many and what types of microplastics are in Narragansett Bay.
