STAUNTON, VA (06/24/2010)(readMedia)-- The City of Staunton Parks and Recreation Department will be installing bike racks around downtown Staunton and in the parks during the coming weeks and months. In an effort to accommodate cyclists and those bike riders that just need a place to secure their bikes while they shop or eat downtown or while they attend an entertainment function at the Bandstand or go swimming at Gypsy Hill Park Pool, the Staunton Recreation and Parks Department will begin to install the bike racks or bike hitching posts this week. Initially the bike racks installed will accommodate many bicycles but there are plenty of bike rack designs that can accommodate fewer bicycles and take up less space.
The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department is collaborating with SDDA to evolve Staunton into a more bike friendly destination by determining specific sites downtown for bike rack installation. Areas that are considered major destinations and attract bicycle riders like the Wharf area and Farmer's Market will get priority for rack placements. Businesses and individuals can get involved and give this movement legs by sponsoring a rack for $300. These racks and hitches will vary in size depending on the location selected for installation. A small inscription plaque will be placed with the rack indicating the rack's sponsor.
Individuals and businesses can make requests for bike rack and hitching post placements by emailing Jennifer Jones @ jonesjl@ci.staunton.va.us. Please indicate the specific location request and why this location would be conducive for rack or hitching post placement. This information will be used to prioritize requests. Rack and hitching post placements must comply with clearance requirements on sidewalks, there are also stipulations that prevent blocking of entrances, driveways, utility vaults as well as blue disabled curb areas.
The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department is motivated to encourage physical activity and make it easier for people to bike in and around the Queen City as it is in direct line with the department's overall mission. In addition, the racks are easy to install and require no maintenance.
