Regional Awards for SUNY Delhi Veterinary Science Technology Faculty, Students and Alumni

DELHI, NY (11/07/2017) (readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi Veterinary Science Technology faculty, students and alumni received awards and honors at the Upstate New York Branch of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (Upstate AALAS) September meeting in Syracuse.
Professor Alan Franks was awarded the Upstate American Association of Laboratory Animal Science Charles E. Schadler Award. This highly prestigious honor was presented to Franks who has made a long-term commitment and outstanding contributions to organization and to the principles of humane laboratory animal care.
Three Delhi Veterinary Science Technology majors were awarded Sam Martin Upstate Branch Scholarship Awards. Each year three veterinary science technology students from across upstate New York are awarded this honor, and this year, all three slots were filled by SUNY Delhi students. Emily Mark of Staatsburg, NY, Andrea Krahforst-Lang of Canaan, NY and Billy Robinson of Owego, NY were each presented $500 for maintaining a B+ or better average, a high degree of skill in "hands-on" techniques in the area of laboratory animal science, and an interest in pursuing a career in the biomedical research community. To qualify, the students wrote essays expressing their goals for education and employment that showed an interest in a career that reflects the values and mission of AALAS.
SUNY Delhi alumni were also recognized at the conference. Christine Peterson '02 from Cornell CARE, an alum who serves on SUNY Delhi's Veterinary Science Technology Advisory Council, was awarded the Upstate AALAS Technician of the Year Award. Peterson was recognized as an animal professional who has exhibited an exceptional interest in the field of laboratory science and who promotes humane animal care.
Also in attendance at the conference were Associate Professor Ken Pyle '69, Instructional Support Specialist and Facility Manager Erica McKee '04, Program Director and Assistant Professor Katherine Murphy and Alicia Quattropani '15 who is head technician trainer at Syracuse University and who works part-time at a private veterinary practice.
Assistant Professor Jessica Schiavo '08 organized the trip and serves as President-Elect and Chair of Outreach for Upstate AALAS.
In addition to the Upstate AALAS awards, SUNY Delhi Instructional Support Associate Kate Dewitt was awarded a Maddie's Fund Grant at the ASPCA Shelter Medicine Conference at Cornell University. SUNY Delhi's Veterinary Science Technology program has donated the $1,000 award to its local animal shelter program partner, Heart of the Catskills Humane Society.
