Residents and Queens Lawmakers to Rally for State Law Bill to Protect 25K+ New Yorkers From Displacement
Queens residents and lawmakers will urge Albany to pass S2433A/A2619 and grant ground lease co-ops standard protections before end of legislative session
QUEENS, NY (05/30/2025) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, dozens of Queens residents and local lawmakers will rally for the Albany Legislature to pass standard tenant protections for more than 25,000 New Yorkers living in ground lease co-ops. Advanced in the Senate and Assembly Housing Committees, Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal sponsor legislation to close a key legal loophole that leaves ground lease co-ops vulnerable against predatory landowner practices.
New York houses nearly 12,000 ground lease co-op apartments across the state, with more than a third of these units located in Queens. Residents in these buildings own their homes but rent the land beneath their co-ops from landowners. With decades-old ground leases beginning to expire, entire buildings are at risk of losing their homes and equity.
