COLCHESTER, VT (05/24/2011)(readMedia)-- At a graduation-week banquet on May 13, Mark A. Lubkowitz of Richmond, Vt., professor of biology, won a Class Appreciation Award, presented to Saint Michael's College faculty and staff who have made a significant impact within the class.

In presenting the award, Senior Class President Kate Condon '11 said that Lubkowitz, who has been at the college for nearly 10 years, "always has a smile on his face and is very passionate about not only his work, but his students." She said the professor "fosters the Saint Michael's College community through the creation and maintenance of the Teaching Gardens and through supervising undergraduate research."

The Teaching Gardens of Saint Michael's College is a collection of three gardens: an arboretum, a children's literature garden named Books in Bloom, and The Native Plants of Vermont Garden. These gardens were created through collaborative work between the education and biology departments with Lubkowitz taking a lead role. Condon further noted that Lubkowitz recently was awarded a National Science Foundation grant recently to fund and support the involvement of students in his research. "He is passionate about his family, outdoor activities, sports and gardening," she said.
