Bill Kirk, H-SC '72, addresses Hampden-Sydney's Society of Founders

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/19/2011)(readMedia)-- J.W. "BILL" KIRK III, Hampden-Sydney Class of 1972 and President and Chief Executive Officer of Associated Asphalt, Inc., headquartered in Roanoke, was awarded the Keating Medallion at the Spring meeting of Hampden-Sydney College's Society of Founders. The Keating Medallion recognizes outstanding service and extraordinary dedication to the College.

While at Hampden-Sydney, Kirk was a first-team All Mason-Dixon Conference defensive tackle on the 1971 Tiger squad that led the nation in defense. He has long been an enthusiastic supporter of the College's athletic program.

In recognition of the generosity of the Kirks, Hampden-Sydney College named the new complex that includes Gammon Gymnasium and its additions and renovations the Kirk Athletic Center in 2008. The Kirk Athletic Center houses all the intercollegiate athletic teams with the exception of basketball which remains in Kirby Field House. The gym is heated and air conditioned with auditorium type seating for 500. In addition the gym is acoustically correct and the maple floor has been restored to its former grandeur. This is the first time in the history of the College that each team had its own locker room and showers.

Kirk's love for Hampden-Sydney College has yielded commitment made manifest in hours dedicated to promoting the College, hours given in wrangling with the issues that confront the College, and passionate commitment made manifest in financial support. He is a Trustee of Hampden-Sydney College.

Supporting his local community, Kirk chaired the successful $10.5 million campaign to build the new Salem Family YMCA and the Kirk Family YMCA in Roanoke. He is a past president and current board member of the Y. Kirk and his wife, Shireen, are active in many community organizations in Roanoke, including Blue Ridge Public Television, the Better Business Bureau, the Art Museum of Western Virginia, Child Health Investment Partnership, and the Conflict Resolution Center.
