ALBANY, NY (04/10/2013)(readMedia)-- ALBANY, NY – Burnice Green, assistant principal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School No. 9 in the Rochester City School District, has been selected as the 2013 New York State Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and the National Association of Elementary School Principals, who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process.
Green is noted for developing and overseeing the School 9 Boys Academy, a grade three through six, school-within-a-school for at-risk youths. Deborah Rider, a fellow administrator from Rochester, stated in a letter of nomination for Green, "Mr. Green exemplifies leadership for the young people of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School. His dedication to his students, his school, and the community at large speaks volumes about his commitment to urban education and the youth of the City of Rochester. As each member of his Young Men's Academy move into high school, they do so being better prepared for the upcoming challenges of college and career readiness."
Several students wrote letters of support and told how the Boys Academy had made a difference in their lives. They noted how Mr. Green serves as a positive role model, teaches them to respect themselves and each other, and that instills a belief that "wisdom and knowledge is power."
Green will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 10, 2013 at the Century House in Latham. As New York's Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year, Green will be celebrated as a National Distinguished Assistant Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals at a recognition program sponsored by NAESP and VALIC this fall in Washington, DC.
