BATAVIA, NY (04/17/2017) (readMedia)-- The Rosalie "Roz" Steiner Art Gallery at Genesee Community College is hosting its first-ever digital art and photography juried student exhibit, entitled "Vision: Digital Art and Photography Student Exhibition" from April 27 – May 21, 2017. The exhibition will recognize students and display their chosen work through the end of the spring semester. Gerald Mead, a well-known artist, collector and educator will select the work to be exhibited from submissions by students enrolled in Digital Art and Photography courses at the College. A series of prizes for the most distinguished work will also be awarded.

Mead is an award winning artist and educator and a former longtime curator at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Buffalo. He has organized over 200 historic and contemporary exhibitions, including a traveling exhibition of work by the internationally known photographer Milton Rogovin, and an exhibition chronicling the career of photographer Cindy Sherman, which was organized for the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University. His own photo-collages are in the permanent collections of Albright-Knox Art Gallery, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, and the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction in Fort Worth, TX.

"We are thrilled to be hosting a juried exhibit for our Digital Art and Photography students under the distinguished eye, talents and experience of Mr. Mead," Mary Jo Whitman, art gallery coordinator said. "It is a great learning experience for our students and it presents an opportunity for them to learn the process of a juried exhibit, and receive feedback about their work from a professional in the field."

Gerald is also a noted art collector, and since 1987 he has assembled a private collection of over 950 pieces of artwork by artists associated with Western New York. Many thematic exhibitions from the Gerald Mead Collection have been presented at college and university galleries and other public venues, including Daemen College in Amherst and El Museo Gallery in Buffalo. He also sponsored the "Of Niagara" at GCC's Roz Steiner Art Gallery in the fall of 2015. He currently teaches in the Design Department at SUNY Buffalo State, and is an independent curator.

The juried exhibit will be on display in the Roz Steiner Art Gallery beginning on Thursday, April 27, 2017 with an opening reception planned for April 27 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. and an additional reception planned for 5 – 7 p.m., when Mead will deliver a lecture beginning a 5 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded to GCC students during the Thursday evening reception with donations from various GCC departments, including Student Activities, Fine Arts Committee, the Photo Club, the Marketing Communications Office and instructors Joe Ziolkowski and Pam Swarts. Go Art!, Karen's Yarn and Paper Scissors are also contributing prizes.
