HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (09/06/2012)(readMedia)-- At Opening Convocation on Tuesday, September 4, Ryan Martin Carter, a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, received the President's Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences.
A Davis Scholar, Ryan serves at Hampden-Sydney as a Head Resident Advisor, as a Peer Mentor, and as Captain, catcher and outfielder on the varsity baseball team. He founded the Hampden-Sydney chapter of Visible Men, a non-profit organization that mentors black male students. He is a member of the national honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics) and Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership).
Ryan has received the President's Award for Scholarship and Character, the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award, and the All-ODAC All-Academic Award. In the spring of 2012 he was selected as a national Truman Scholar, one of only two students from Virginia. An economics and commerce major, Ryan is a graduate of Thomas Dale High School and is the son of Russ & Brenda Carter of Chester.
