HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/09/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College senior Ryan Martin Carter received both the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award, presented by Dr. Justin P. Isaacs '95, Associate Professor of Economics, and the Rhetoric Best Speaker Award, presented by Dr. Lizabeth A. Rand, Elliott Associate Professor of Rhetoric.
The Wall Street Journal Award is given to the senior economics major who, over his college career, has achieved the highest overall grade-point average.
The Speech Contest is funded by the John Augustus Moore Oral Rhetoric Fund. The fund was presented to the College in 1988 by Elizabeth and Mary Moore in honor of their nephew, John Augustus Moore, Class of 1978. John's aunts describe their nephew as an energetic, highly motivated, and well-read student, a man who embodied H-SC's vision of the good man and good citizen. They wished to establish a fund that would enhance oral rhetoric at Hampden-Sydney College. Ryan's winning speech was entitled, "Individual Roots."
A Davis Scholar, Ryan serves as a Head Resident Advisor, as a Peer Mentor, and as Captain of the varsity baseball team where he plays catcher and outfield. He is a member of the Society of '91 (leadership program), the national honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics) and Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), and he was selected for Who's Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges. Ryan has received the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award, the President's Award for Scholarship and Character, the President's Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences, the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award, and the All-ODAC All-Academic Award. An economics and commerce major, Ryan graduated from Thomas Dale High School and is the son of Robert (Russ) & Brenda Carter of Chester.
A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
