STATE BAR HONORS C. EVAN STEWART WITH 2016 SANFORD LEVY AWARD

ALBANY, NY (03/22/2016)(readMedia)-- New York City financial services attorney C. Evan Stewart has been honored with the 2016 Sanford D. Levy Award by the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Professional Ethics.

Named for Sanford D. Levy, a former member of the Committee on Professional Ethics, the award was presented March 16 in Manhattan. Since 1982, it has been presented to an individual or institution that, in the opinion of the committee, has contributed most to understanding and advancement in the field of professional ethics.

"Many of the previous recipients of the Levy Award have been academics," said Marjorie E. Gross of New York City (Law Office of Marjorie E. Gross), chair of the Committee on Professional Ethics. "But since Sandy Levy was a solo practitioner and not an academic, I think he would be particularly happy that we are giving his namesake award this year to someone who contributes to an understanding of legal ethics by practitioners."

Stewart is a senior partner in the New York City office of Cohen & Gresser LLP, focusing on business and commercial litigation. He has written extensively in the field of legal ethics, including regular articles in the State Bar's Business Law Journal. He also has taught as an adjunct law professor at Fordham Law School and as a visiting professor at Cornell University.

"Evan's articles combine comprehensive knowledge of the law with practical advice for attorneys on how to avoid ethical pitfalls in day-to-day practice," said David Glass of New York City (Macquarie Group Limited), editor of the Business Law Journal. "His entertaining, witty and clear writing has made his articles a favorite of our readers."

Previous recipients of the Sanford D. Levy Award include former New York State Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye; Professor Stephen Gillers (New York University School of Law); Professor Thomas D. Morgan (George Washington School of Law); Roger C. Cramton of Ithaca (Cornell University Law School); and in 2015, author and distinguished Professor Roy D. Simon.

The New York State Bar Association, with 74,000 members, is the largest voluntary state bar association in the country. It was founded in 1876.
