STATE DOT TEAMS ASSESSING DAMAGE TO ROADS AND BRIDGES

Department Working with State and Local Officials to Reopen Flood-Damaged Roadways

ALBANY, NY (08/29/2011)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that teams of department experts from across the state have been deployed to areas Tropical Storm Irene damaged this weekend to assess the condition of hundreds of state and local roads and bridges, ensuring their structural integrity and expediting the reopening of those closed by flooding.

"At Governor Andrew Cuomo's direction, the State Department of Transportation is coordinating with the State Emergency Management Office and other state and local agencies to assess damage and make critical infrastructure repairs in order to get our transportation system back in business," Commissioner McDonald said. "This work is going to take some time because of the extensive storm damage across the eastern part of the state. We thank travelers for their patience as we work to restore mobility, always keeping public safety as our top priority."

The NYSDOT assessment teams include experts on highway and structural engineering, as well as maintenance. Flooded bridges and highways are inspected before being reopened to ensure they are structurally sound. Facilities that have been damaged will be closed until repairs can be made.
