SUNY Canton Breaks Winterterm Enrollment Record

CANTON, NY (01/10/2017)(readMedia)-- Enrollment for SUNY Canton's online Winterterm session has reached an all-time record for the third consecutive year.

Total enrollment for the 2016-17 session is 1,474, which surpasses the previous record of 1,434, set last year. Classes began Dec. 21 and continue through Jan. 19.

According to Molly A. Mott, associate provost and dean of academic support services and instructional technologies, the session's popularity is due to the variety of course offerings and the college's reputation for excellence in online learning. Approximately 100 courses were available in an array of subjects, including finance, business, marketing, art history and creative writing.

"Our Winterterm session delivers the same quality instruction SUNY Canton is known for to anyone, anywhere in an accelerated format," she said. "The four-week course schedule allows students to catch up or get ahead on credits between the fall and spring semesters from the comfort of their home."

Mott noted that a large percentage of Winterterm enrollees are those who attend institutions other than SUNY Canton.

"As in the past, a significant number of students from public and private colleges throughout New York - such as Stony Brook, Syracuse University and Binghamton University - utilize our course offerings year after year."

Off-term sessions such as Winterterm support SUNY system-wide completion goals by allowing students the flexibility to earn credits that may help them graduate on time or even early. Another advantage of the online session, Mott said, is that the college guarantees every course that is advertised will be offered.

SUNY Canton's online degree programs have been ranked among the best in the country for three years in a row by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, several online programs have been specifically recognized by independent research organizations for their affordability, such as Finance, Legal Studies, Nursing, Health Care Management and Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Leadership.

Winterterm's growth closely mirrors the college's online Summer Session, which has also enjoyed a significant increase in enrollments for the past three consecutive years.
