SUNY Canton Honors Career Services Director for Dedication to Students

CANTON, NY (06/04/2010)(readMedia)-- SUNY Canton's College Council has presented Director of Career Services David F. Norenberg with the 2010 Excellence in College Service Award for helping students find careers.

"David has provided valuable career guidance to students and helped them leave SUNY Canton with a career," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. "He's played an important part in helping students during their entire education by working jointly with faculty and offering his services as part of each students education."

Norenberg was awarded for his enthusiasm and teamwork with both students and faculty, and for his efforts in transforming the College's Career Services office. In addition to organizing annual Career Fairs, he has coordinated Law Enforcement Career Days and gives training presentations to resident assistants and orientation leaders. Norenberg conducts workshops each year to simplify the job search process and assist students in achieving their career goals. As a result, there has been a steady climb in the percentage of employed graduates.

He has developed online surveys for graduates and alumni, tracking up-to-date graduate placement statistics. He's developed the on-line recruiting site, "Jobs 4 Roos" and has made web-based tools available for students and alumni, such as Optimal Resume and the Vault Online Career Library.

"David's utilization of new technology has enabled our office to be more effective and efficient in assisting our clients," said Teresa Clemmo, secretary for the Career Services office. "On-line job postings, resume assistance and career related programs have streamlined the Career Services office and increased the number of students we're able to serve."

Norenberg is also often found in the classroom working with faculty and students, or meeting with employers and encouraging them to recruit SUNY Canton students for internships and job opportunities.

"David is a committed community member who has genuine concern for the well-being of students on multiple levels, which is expressed not only through his ability to help students plan for their futures, but also through his commitments to critical thinking and exploration," said Assistant Professor of Humanities Dr. Kelly A. Concannnon-Mannise. "He is not only interested in helping students get to where they want to be, but is committed to playing a role in getting students to examine who they want to be."

Norenberg received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1993 and earned his Master's of Science in Education in Counseling in 1996. He worked for United Way in Schenectady from 1997-2001 before relocating to the North Country to begin his work as Interim Assistant Director of Career Services at St. Lawrence University. Norenberg also worked in St. Lawrence's University Communications office as the Digital Asset and On-line Data Manager from 2002 through October 2005 before joining SUNY Canton.

Norenberg is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and SUNY CDO (Career Development Organizations). He is also a member of SUNY Canton's Council for University Strategic Planning (CUSP).

The Excellence in College Service Award is awarded annually to a member of the non-teaching professional staff who demonstrates effectiveness in performance and university service, professional ability and mastery in their specialization. He was recognized at the College's Recognition Day ceremony on Friday, May 28.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor's, associate, and certificate programs. Most of SUNY Canton's new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College's athletic teams belong to the NAIA's Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years. Construction is now underway for the College's new Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center nicknamed Roos House.
