CANTON, NY (06/12/2015)(readMedia)-- The David Sullivan-St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy completed its 20th year of operation by saluting 23 newly trained law enforcement professionals. More than half of those graduates were sworn in as officers for area police departments.
"Cadets complete 21 weeks of intensive and rigorous instruction," noted Academy Director Albert R. "Sonny" Duquette. "We constantly update and revise our training sessions, so every year graduates are more than prepared to start their careers."
In addition to the traditional Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Vehicle Operation and Defensive Tactics courses, cadets are now taught to administer Narcan, a lifesaving drug used to counteract opioid overdose.
The academy recently held a graduation ceremony for this year's class. Cadets are recognized for either completing the pre-employment training or are sworn in as officers of their respective sponsoring agencies. Among the officers and graduates in this year's class were:
- Dylan T. Barringer completed the pre-employment training.
- Nicholas C. Belile was sworn in as an officer of the Norfolk Police Department.
- Kyle J. Blackmer was sworn in as an officer of the Ogdensburg Police Department. Blackmer received an award for best overall physical fitness.
- Jose Colon was sworn in as an officer of the Norfolk Police Department.
- Seth D. Donalis completed the pre-employment training. Donalis received an award for emergency vehicle operations.
- Aaron C. Emerson completed the pre-employment training.
- Travis N. Farmer was sworn in as an officer of the Saranac Lake Police Department. Farmer received an award for best overall academics.
- Tyler R. Greene completed the pre-employment training.
- John R. Harriman completed the pre-employment training.
- Sarah J. Hinrichsen completed the pre-employment training.
- Brandon A. Huckle was sworn in as an officer of the Norwood Police Department. Huckle received a marksmanship award.
- Travis M. Labar was sworn in as an officer of the Norfolk Police Department.
- Holly M. Lyndaker was sworn in as a deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
- Brooke A. Massia completed the pre-employment training.
- Peter K. Mueller completed the pre-employment training.
- Gregory T. Pecore was sworn in as an officer of the Malone Police Department.
- Jay M. Peets was sworn in as an officer of the Tupper Lake Police Department. Peets received the academy director's 110 percent award.
- Marc R. Plante was sworn in as an officer of the Norwood Police Department.
- Michael B. Roman completed the pre-employment training.
- John J. Smith was sworn in as an officer of the Gouverneur Police Department. Smith received an award for arrest techniques and defensive tactics. He also won the David Sullivan best overall cadet award.
- Codie B. Southworth completed the pre-employment training.
- Nathan E. Stark completed the pre-employment training.
- Kailyn Walker-Law was sworn in as an officer of the Norwood Police Department.
Of the pre-employment graduates, seven were SUNY Canton alumni.
