CANTON, NY (11/10/2015)(readMedia)-- SUNY Canton has been ranked as one of the best colleges in the nation for animal lovers, according to Great Value

The college placed ninth out of 25 schools and was chosen in large part for its well-known Pet Wing housing option that began in 1997. Students are able to bring a variety of pets with them to live on campus, including cats, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and fish.

"SUNY Canton was a pioneer in pet-friendly housing," said John M. Kennedy, SUNY Canton director of residence life. "Our mission has always been to enhance the community-like atmosphere that we are known for, and the Pet Wing plays an important role in achieving that."

The unique housing option is a favorite choice among students who are pursuing an associate degree in Veterinary Science Technology or a bachelor's degree in Veterinary Service Administration or Veterinary Technology.

"There are two reasons why I chose to attend SUNY Canton: for the Veterinary Technology program and the Pet Wing," said student Alexandria E. Kirkwood from Salisbury, N.C. "I learned about SUNY Canton while researching pet-friendly schools."

The website also praised the campus' pet-friendly environment and animal-related clubs and organizations. Most recently, students have raised funds to outfit local police dogs with lifesaving Kevlar vests, as well as provide supplies to local animal rescue organizations. The college also sponsors pet therapy sessions for students to relax and de-stress during finals week.

Great Value offers resources to help students find the best degree offerings, career options for graduates and more. The organization's mission is to help students get the best possible education for their money through "high-quality, research-based articles and rankings covering a broad number of angles to help the most students possible." The accolade is the latest in a string of awards SUNY Canton has received for its animal-friendly environment. The college has twice been named to's Top 10 Pet Friendly Colleges list.
