CANTON, NY (09/09/2016)(readMedia)-- A respected academic leader from New Zealand has embarked upon an American educational adventure at SUNY Canton.

Caroline McCaw, Ph.D., who taught communication design at Otago Polytechnic, won a prestigious Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Award to teach in the college's Graphic and Multimedia Design (GMMD) program. McCaw is currently living in Hermon with her two sons.

SUNY Canton helped facilitate the Fulbright position, which will pay for McCaw's 10-month stay. McCaw visited the college during the fall 2015 semester and presented as part of the visiting lecture series.

Her area of specialty includes examining the value of local art and design.

"A large part of New Zealand's design identity relies on picturing ourselves in landscapes," she explained. "I'm interested in the idea of design engaging more socially with landscapes."

She is currently teaching an Arts of Oceania course and other design related classes.

SUNY Canton faculty members noted that McCaw's research coincides with the North Country culture. "Much of what we create locally is based on envisioning ourselves amongst the beautiful and majestic scenery exclusive to our locale," said Christopher Sweeney, associate professor and curriculum coordinator for the GMMD program. "Our students will benefit from her experience and unique vision."

McCaw will be supplementing the program during Associate Professor Matthew Burnett's sabbatical. Burnett has accepted a teaching fellowship at the Munich University of Applied Sciences in Germany.
